Armstrong directs flags flown at half-staff Friday in memory of 9/11 victims on 25th anniversary of attacks

BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. Kelly Armstrong has directed all government agencies to fly the United States and North Dakota flags at half-staff on Friday, and encourages North Dakota residents to do the same at their homes and businesses, in remembrance of those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

“Twenty-five years ago, our country was attacked by an enemy who wanted to destroy us and everything we stand for. In the quarter-century that followed, we have faced this attack on our values, our freedom and our fellow citizens with strength and resiliency, fueled by the indomitable American spirit,” Armstrong said. “We will never forget the victims of those unspeakable acts, the heroes who died trying to save them, and the military members who have laid down their lives in the Global War on Terror. And we offer our prayers and support for their loved ones who continue to bear the scars of that loss.”

The governor’s directive is in accordance with a joint resolution of Congress designating Sept. 11 of each year as Patriot Day and federal law requesting the observance of Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Americans are encouraged to observe a moment of silence at 7:46 a.m. Central Daylight Time to honor the victims of the attacks.
